What began as one of the first UHF television stations in the country has turned into a broadcasting powerhouse.
CW 27, WGNT-TV currently reigns as one of the highest rated CW affiliates in the country.
But CW 27 hasn't always been what you see today. Back in 1953, the station was known as WTOV and our signature show was Captain Video.
WTOV was short-lived in the '50's, but in 1961, Pat Robertson turned the then WYAH into the backbone of what would become the Christian Broadcasting Network.
For the next 27 years, WYAH showed mostly religious programming until the station was sold to Centennial Communications, Inc. and began showing more general entertainment programming.
On January 16th, 1995 the station became a charter member of the United Paramount Network, blasting off with the premiere of Star Trek: Voyager.
On October 31st, 1997 WGNT completed its transition to the station that exists today when it was acquired by Viacom, Inc and became a part of the Paramount Stations Group, now the CBS Corp. Television Stations Group.
In January 2006, CBS Corporation and Warner Bros. Entertainment announced their intent to form a new 5th network, The CW.
The new broadcasting network was a joint venture between Warner Bros. Entertainment, parent company of The WB and CBS Corporation, the parent company of UPN, with each company owning 50%. The programming marries the best from the UPN and WB networks including, America's Next Top Model, Everybody Hates Chris, Smallville and others.
On September 18th, WGNT became The CW affiliate for the Hampton Roads market.
Today - nearly 50 years after first signing on as WTOV - CW 27, WGNT-TV is a television force in Hampton Roads, leading our market, and in some cases, the country, with top-rated fare like Judge Judy, Judge Joe Brown, Dr. Phil and America's Next Top Model.
On June 14th, 2010, Local TV LLC signed an agreement to purchase heritage WGNT-TV, CW27 in the DMA. The deal comes with an immediate Local Marketing Agreement between the two companies so joint operations are already underway. Local TV LLC also owns CBS affiliate WTKR Television in the Hampton Roads DMA.
